A Note from the Pastor
The former head chaplain of Central State Hospital, the state mental hospital in Kentucky, used to have a poster in his office. It said, “It’s always darkest before the dawn.” I don’t know if that’s true in a physical sense but it can seem that way sometimes emotionally and spiritually. When we go through what one writer called “the dark nights of the soul” we feel that.
I always took that poster as an encouraging reminder. It said to me don’t be fooled and believe the darkness, the dawn is coming. By remembering the hope of the light to come we can face the darkness of a present night.
This time of year is always a reminder to me of hope. I don’t know when I have more looked forward to spring than this year. That’s not just because I like the season but because this winter has been harder than usual. I’ll be tempted to dance in the park when the grass is green and the flowers are blooming, although I will try to contain myself. More than spring, the coming celebration of the resurrection of Jesus brings the refreshment of hope.
We will be celebrating Holy Week again this year with some of the other churches in Dublin with lunchtime worship services. We will host the Monday service at DBC. Holy Week was a microcosm of life for the disciples. They went from the exhilaration of the triumphant entry into Jerusalem to the despair and defeat of the crucifixion. The darkest hours of their lives came right before the dawn of the Resurrection Day.
The services will be from 12:07 till 12:37 with a light lunch to follow. Churches will host on this schedule:
Monday: Dublin Baptist Church
Tuesday: Dublin Presbyterian Church
Wednesday: Dublin United Methodist Church
Thursday: Dublin Church of God
Friday: Highland Park Community Church
Plan to join us for a time not just of worship but a time to remember the gift of hope Jesus gave us. Never lose sight, Resurrection Sunday is coming!
